Family: Araceae
Origin: Sri Lanka
Growth type: Rosette plant
Placement: Foreground to midground
Difficulty: Easy
This is one of the most reliable and widely used crypts in freshwater aquascaping. It forms dense green rosettes and is highly adaptable.
Leaf shape: Lanceolate to slightly wavy
Leaf texture: Smooth to lightly ruffled
Color: Medium to deep green
Height: 10–20 cm (can reach ~25 cm in rich setups)
Growth form: Compact rosette with underground runners
Unlike stem plants, it does not grow vertically in columns — it spreads slowly via runners.
| Parameter | Ideal Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Low–Medium | High light not required |
| CO₂ | Optional | Benefits but not necessary |
| Temperature | 22–28°C | Stable tropical range |
| pH | 6.0–7.5 | Adaptable |
| GH | Soft–moderate | Tolerant |
| Flow | Low–Moderate | Avoid strong direct flow |
This plant performs very well in low-tech systems.
Growth rate: Slow to moderate
Spread: Through substrate runners
Height control: Naturally compact
Density: Forms bushy clumps over time
It is stable once established and rarely needs heavy pruning.
Remove rock wool completely.
Trim damaged roots slightly.
Plant so the crown (growth point) is just above substrate.
⚠️ Do not bury the crown — this causes rot.
Best grown in nutrient-rich substrate or with root tabs.
Cryptocorynes are primarily root feeders.
Recommended:
Root tabs every 2–3 months
Moderate nitrogen supply
Stable potassium levels
Column dosing helps but is secondary to substrate nutrition.
One common phenomenon is “crypt melt”:
Symptoms:
Leaves suddenly turn translucent and decay
Often occurs after planting or major parameter changes
Cause:
Environmental shock (light, temperature, water chemistry shifts)
Solution:
Leave roots in substrate
Do not remove plant
New leaves usually regrow in 2–4 weeks
Crypt melt is temporary in most cases.
Slow growth
Normal; crypts are not fast growers
Leaf holes
Often potassium deficiency
Small leaves
Low substrate nutrients
Algae
Usually light imbalance rather than plant issue
Best suited for:
Midground clusters
Natural jungle layouts
Low-tech tanks
Shaded areas under driftwood
Pairs well with:
Hygrophila corymbosa 'Siamensis'
Micranthemum tweediei
Bucephalandra 'Wavy Green'
It creates a natural, forest-floor aesthetic.
Extremely hardy
Low light tolerant
Minimal maintenance
Excellent for beginners
Slow spread
Prone to initial melt
Less dramatic color compared to red crypts
| Feature | Wendtii Green | Wendtii Brown |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Solid green | Brown/bronze |
| Light requirement | Low | Low–Medium |
| Growth speed | Similar | Similar |
| Visual impact | Natural green | Warmer tone |
High-tech (CO₂ + strong light):
Slightly faster growth
Slightly larger leaves
Denser clumps
Low-tech:
Slower growth
Very stable
Ideal beginner plant
