This is a full technical guide focused on the Tici (Tissue Culture / In Vitro) form used in aquascaping.
Family: Cyperaceae
Origin: Widely distributed (Europe, North America, Asia)
Growth Type: Rhizomatous grass-like sedge
Blade Shape: Very thin, hair-like cylindrical stems
Height (submerged): 5–15 cm (can be trimmed shorter)
Color: Bright green
It spreads through underground runners, forming a soft meadow effect.
Lab-grown in sterile nutrient gel.
Pest-free (no snails, algae spores)
No pesticides (shrimp-safe)
Clean and compact portions
Ideal for starting new tanks
Remove from cup.
Rinse off gel completely.
Divide into small clumps (5–8 blades).
Plant 1–2 cm apart with tweezers.
Small, evenly spaced plugs establish faster and spread more uniformly.
| Parameter | Ideal Range | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Medium–High | Controls height |
| CO₂ | Recommended (15–30 ppm) | Improves density |
| Substrate | Nutrient-rich aquasoil preferred | Strong root feeder |
| Temperature | 18–26°C | Cooler temps = denser growth |
| pH | 6.0–7.5 | Adaptable |
| KH | 0–8 dKH | Tolerant |
Compared to E. parvula, this species generally grows taller and softer.
Dense grassy field
Faster runner production
Compact 5–8 cm height
Slower spreading
Taller (10–15 cm)
Less dense carpet
Moderate feeder (mainly through roots).
Needs:
Nitrogen (NO₃)
Potassium (K)
Iron (Fe)
Root nutrients (aquasoil or root tabs)
Deficiency symptoms:
Yellowing tips → Nitrogen or iron deficiency
Slow spreading → Low nutrients or compacted substrate
Trim to desired height (2–5 cm for tight carpet).
Remove trapped debris.
Maintain good water circulation.
Replant uprooted runners if necessary.
Frequent trimming encourages horizontal spread and thickening.
Normal transition from emersed to submerged form (1–3 weeks).
Cause: Weak lighting or low nutrients
Fix: Increase light and stabilize fertilization
Cause: Poor flow or unstable CO₂
Fix: Improve circulation and injection stability

| Feature | E. acicularis | E. parvula |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 5–15 cm | 3–10 cm |
| Look | Softer, meadow | Shorter grass |
| Density | Medium–High | High |
| Difficulty | Moderate | Moderate |
Acicularis = taller natural meadow
Parvula = shorter compact lawn
Tici Eleocharis acicularis is:
A fine-leaved grassy carpeting plant
Moderately demanding
Responsive to CO₂ and light
Ideal for natural-style aquascapes
