🐠 Over Half-Moon Betta Rosetail Male

🔹 Overview

The Over Half-Moon Betta Rosetail Male is a selectively bred variety of Betta splendens (Siamese fighting fish).
It’s one of the most spectacular and ornate forms, famous for its massive, flowing fins and “rose-like” tail pattern.

  • “Half-Moon”: Refers to the tail that spreads 180° when flared.

  • “Over Half-Moon”: Means the tail extends beyond 180°, often forming a near-perfect circle.

  • “Rosetail”: Describes extra fin branching and overlapping rays that make the tail resemble rose petals — highly decorative and ruffled.

  • “Male”: Males show the most vibrant colours and longest fins, making them the stars of this variety.

🔹 Key Physical Traits

  1. Tail Shape – Wide, rounded fan exceeding 180°, often overlapping like rose petals.

  2. Fins – Very long, flowing, and delicate. The dorsal and anal fins are large and balanced with the caudal fin.

  3. Body Size – Typically 5–7 cm (2–2.75 in) in body length, excluding fins.

  4. Colours – Found in solid, bicolour, marble, koi, and multicolour patterns. Metallic tones (copper, turquoise, gold) are also common.

  5. Unique Look – When fully flared, the Rosetail male looks like a flower in motion, with shimmering layers of fins.

🔹 Behaviour and Personality

  • Temperament: Territorial and solitary. Males will fight each other if housed together.

  • Activity Level: Graceful but slower swimmers due to the heavy fins.

  • Interaction: Recognizes owners, may come to the surface for food or attention.

  • Flaring: Displays fins and gills to assert dominance or show off — a natural behaviour that keeps muscles strong.

🔹 Tank and Environment

  • Tank Size: At least 10 litres (2.5 gallons) per fish; 20 litres or more preferred for comfort and stability.

  • Temperature: 24–28 °C (75–82 °F).

  • pH: 6.5–7.5.

  • Filtration: Gentle filtration — strong flow can tear fins or exhaust the fish.

  • Substrate: Smooth sand or small gravel.

  • Decor: Soft plants (live or silk), caves, driftwood, and smooth surfaces for resting. Avoid sharp decorations.

  • Lighting: Moderate light; enhance colours but avoid excessive brightness.

  • Cover: Use a lid or cover — bettas breathe air at the surface and may jump.

🔹 Feeding and Diet

  • Diet Type: Carnivorous.

  • Staple Foods: High-protein betta pellets or flakes.

  • Supplements: Live or frozen foods — brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, mosquito larvae.

  • Feeding Frequency: 1–2 small meals daily; only what can be eaten in about 2 minutes.

  • Fasting Day: Skip one feeding day per week to prevent bloating.

🔹 Health and Maintenance

Because of the Rosetail’s extra-long fins, special care is needed:

Common Issues:

  1. Fin Rot: Caused by poor water quality or injury — treat early and maintain clean water.

  2. Tail Damage: Heavy fins tear easily; avoid sharp décor and rough handling.

  3. Fin Curling: Can result from too strong a current, poor diet, or cold water.

  4. Swim Fatigue: The large fins can slow swimming — avoid deep or turbulent tanks.

  5. Bloating / Constipation: From overfeeding or improper diet; feed sparingly and include frozen daphnia occasionally.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Change 25–30 % of water weekly.

  • Keep temperature stable — avoid sudden drops.

  • Test water regularly for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.

  • Observe fins and colour daily; early signs of illness are easier to treat.

🔹 Compatibility

  • Keep one male per tank unless divided.

  • Can share space with peaceful, slow fish or snails/shrimp, provided they don’t nip fins.

  • Avoid barbs, guppies, tetras, or any fin-nipping or active species.

  • Females or other bettas should only be kept with males in carefully managed breeding or divided setups.

🔹 Breeding Notes

  • Breeding Rosetails is delicate — they are often prone to genetic deformities due to excessive fin branching.

  • Breeders select only strong, healthy pairs to prevent weak fry.

  • Males build bubble nests and care for eggs, but breeding should be done by experienced aquarists only.

🔹 Lifespan

  • Average 2–4 years, occasionally up to 5 with excellent care.

  • Proper diet, clean water, and stable temperature significantly increase longevity.

🔹 Why They’re Special

  • The Over Half-Moon Rosetail Male is one of the most visually dramatic bettas.

  • Its oversized, ruffled fins give it a royal and elegant appearance.

  • Each fish is unique in colour and pattern — no two Rosetails are identical.

  • They are ideal as solo display fish in aquariums where their beauty can be the main focus.
