The fish has a deep, elongated body with a flat forehead and a pointed snout. The base coloration is dark, usually black or dark brown, with prominent orange or red tiger-like stripes that run vertically across its body. 

Oscars are known for their large size. When well cared for, they can grow up to 12-16 inches (30-40 cm) in length, sometimes even larger.

Oscars are generally territorial and can be aggressive, especially when they reach maturity. They may exhibit territorial behavior and might not tolerate tank mates that invade their space. It’s recommended to keep them with other large, robust fish or as a solitary specimen in a suitably sized aquarium.

Oscars require a spacious aquarium. A minimum tank size of 55 gallons (208 liters) is usually recommended for a single Oscar, but larger tanks are even better. They appreciate plenty of hiding spots, such as caves or driftwood, and open swimming space. Adequate filtration and regular water changes are essential for maintaining good water quality.

Oscars prefer slightly acidic to neutral water conditions. The ideal temperature range is around 74-81°F (23-27°C), and the pH should be maintained between 6.5 and 7.5. Regular monitoring of water parameters and consistent maintenance are crucial for their well-being.
